The Mystic's Vision is hosted by me, Swami Abhayananda, and is dedicated to the praise and glorification of God for the benefit of all His children. It is founded on my own direct experience, and is intended to confirm, clarify, and propagate the perennial teachings of the mystics.
All of the books and articles found on this website are concerned, not with religious doctrines, but with direct personal experience. This experience, 'the mystic's vision', occurs as one's individual consciousness is uplifted by grace to union with the eternal Source of all consciousness and all being. That vision has been referred to as "enlightenment", "Self-realization", "the mystic marriage", or "union with God", but no matter what its called, this unitive experience is one and the same for all.
The mystic's vision challenges the ordinary way in which we see the world,
for in that vision all is seen as divine; all is seen to be the one eternal Consciousness appearing as the various objects of the world. One who has experienced that vision and has known his or her transcendent identity as the one all-pervading Spirit is said to be a mystic. He/she is enlightened and knows with certainty that he/she is a wave on the ocean of God, immersed in God, united with God, and made of God.
In the time of the ancient Greeks, the formulation of the precepts relating to this experience came to be called "mysticism", or "gnosis", and we still use these words today. Mysticism is not limited to any one religious tradition, but may be thought of as the experiential origin and fountainhead of all authentic religious teachings and religious traditions. While the testaments of the mystics of each religion have contributed greatly to our universal spiritual knowledge, it is nonetheless clear that the sectarian religions are irrelevant to the interior knowledge (gnosis) of God experienced in the soul. For this direct experience of God clearly does not rely upon the sectarian doctrines of any single religion, but is a common experience of all mankind, regardless of religious affiliation or intellectual acceptance. It is a one-on-one experience between the individual soul and God, in which the two are realized to be one. No religious doctrine is required, but only the love and yearning for God in the soul.

My own mystical experience occurred in 1966, at the age of twenty-eight. I had been drawn to a remote cabin in the Santa Cruz mountains of California by my desire to know God. Prior to that time, I had known nothing of mysticism or mystical experience. Later, in the early 1980’s, I wrote about
my own mystical experience in my first book, entitled The Supreme Self. This book is undoubtedly the best introduction to everything that I have written since that time, and should be read in its entirety or downloaded at the 'Read or Download Books' page. But if you would prefer to just see a brief excerpt from the book containing a description of that mystical experience, please
click on "Read Or Download Articles", then click on Volume One of The Mystic's Vision, and scroll down the Table of Contents to Part Four :"My Enlightenment Experience".
After publishing The Supreme Self in 1984, I began documenting the lives and teachings of the more famous of those persons throughout history who had experienced a similar revelation, and this collection was published in 1987 as History of Mysticism. The visitor to this website who wishes to understand mysticism and the nondual mystical experience should begin with these two books, in that order. They will provide an adequate introduction to mystical experience and its long history. Both of these books, as well as subsequent publications, may be read or downloaded at no cost from the ‘Read or Download Books’ page of this website. On the 'Read Or Download Articles' page of this website the recently revised two-volume collection of Selected Articles from "The Mystic's Vision" website may also be read or downloaded at no cost.
